Gifted and Talented Provision in the Senior School

The provision for Gifted and Talented children reflects the general philosophy of Alderley Edge School for Girls, in which we are academically rigorous and where every child could benefit from a multitude of opportunities to excel. It is also in accordance with the DfES and ISC and reflects current national educational policy.

More able pupils may be referred to as: gifted, talented, more able, highly able, exceptionally able or high attainers. For example, Excellence in Cities uses the terms Gifted and Talented to describe top 5% - 10% in every school. 'Gifted' pupils have evident high attainment or potential in academic subjects; 'talented' pupils have evident high attainment or potential in a creative or expressive art or sport.

We take time to identify each child's preferred learning style and follow Gardner's work. He has provided classifications which include; linguistic (word smart), logical mathematical (number smart), visual spatial (picture smart), bodily kinaesthetic (body smart), musical (music smart), interpersonal (people smart), intrapersonal (self smart) and naturalist (nature smart). The students complete a short test to discover this preferred learning style and this is supported with ideas on how to work in their field more effectively.

We follow a rigorous target setting and mentoring programme involving each student, their form teacher and Head of Year. At the end of each Key Stage, they are also interviewed by Senior Management. This provides a forum for discussion, advice and recognition of their talents in their particular field, alongside goals for the future.
